Weatherford International's (WFT)second-quarter earnings came on the weaker side due to a slowdown in its Canadian operations and cost overruns in Mexico. However, sales grew 23% year-over-year to $2.23 billion, boosted by strong international growth.
We believe that Weatherford will continue to experience sustained overall growth, aided by robust sales in the Eastern Hemisphere and Latin America and the emerging Canadian recovery. However, with Weatherford's premium valuation already incorporating these positives, we see limited upside from current levels and maintain our Hold recommendation unchanged. Our preferred names in this space include Baker-Hughes (BHI)and National Oilwell Varco (NOV).
Through the rest of 2008 and into 2009, average worldwide rig activity is expected to grow. Weatherford expects its business to continue to grow at a faster rate than the underlying rig count. The company is focusing on improving returns in its core business and enhancing its exposure to faster-growing new technologies and services. The company is investing between $400 million and $500 million annually on R&D and new technology developments.
New technologies are paying off, as new offerings are enhancing drilling and production operations while contributing to bottom line growth given the relatively higher margins on new products. The recent successful launch of a compact stratigraphical logging device, which could be deployed for real-time micro image logging activities, is further evidence of the company's consistent new product launches. During the second quarter of 2008, the company successfully ran its logging-while-drilling (LWD) Triple Combo at very high temperature and pressure.
Another significant growth driver for Weatherford in the near to medium term is the company's involvement in a number of integrated drilling projects. During the first quarter of 2008, the company booked substantial added contracts for the deepwater markets on and around new technological offerings.
